VivaCell-MTS has deployed Internet DNS root name (L-Root) server on its network

VivaCell-MTS has deployed Internet DNS root name (L-Root) server on its network.

Due to that the Company’s subscribers to data services have received a major boost in domain name lookup performance, company informs.

The benefit is made available to VivaCell-MTS, based on its membership in ARMIX (Armenian Internet Exchange).

Armenia will now have a local copy of this important service. Internet root servers contain a database of the top level domain names, like .com .org .net and .info.

Availability of a domestic Internet root server in a country provides several benefits to internet users. Thus, it ensures that DNS queries in the country are resolved about 10 times faster for local Internet users, with improved service resiliency both locally and nationwide. It also strengthens the overall security and stability of the Internet in Armenia.

Yet, the major benefit for the ultimate internet users is that local domain name lookups can continue even if the international connectivity is disrupted.

“This is a very significant milestone for increasing the quality of Internet services provided by
VivaCell-MTS and for Armenia, in general. This development is an extension of VivaCell-MTS’
strategy to help transforming Armenia into a knowledge based economy,” VivaCell-MTS General Manager. Ralph Yirikian commented.

Currently, there are over 240 root server copies around the world, grouped into 13 clusters, operated by various organizations such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Verisign and other organizations.
