Girls in Tech: Anushik Torozyan

We pictured exclusively a man when we said “IT specialist in Armenia” a few years ago, but the success of Armenian technological products on international markets and the numerous projects promoting startup development have made the industry more attractive for women as well in recent times.

Whether it’s coding, developing products or making other contribution to the team, the opportunities are numerous.

Itel.am presents Armenian women engaged in IT industry in the “Girls in Tech” series.

Anushik Torozyan is a User Experience Design expert. She is UX consultant at GoDaddy, taking the position at the U.S.-based domain registrar after working as Lead UX Architect at PicsArt.

I started working as soon as I became a university student, because I was already interested in new technologies. I studied painting and design and decided to try my hand in related programming too. The prospects of that field were encouraging, so I started learning relevant programs.

Combining family and work in IT industry has one main difficulty: many companies collaborate with foreign partners, so sometimes you have to work late hours, which has an impact on your family.

Women in tech are especially hard-working, responsible and committed. I know other women in IT and I can testify that they attach significant importance to self-development.

Given my profession, I should always be informed about tech news. I don’t believe I have to own a new iPhone, but I spend a lot of time just following the changes to the design of multiple programs.

Every new smartphone brings new functions and it’s better to test them and see how you can develop programs that will be convenient to use on the given phone.

From my point of view, the challenges of IT industry are that you need to be as well-informed as possible about the latest developments, be able to learn programs, methods and even new professions easily because everything changes so quickly. By the way, my current profession is quite new.

My message to women and girls making their first steps in IT industry is don’t give up, don’t get disappointed, just be patient and keep working. The difficulties can be overcome. If you love what you do, success will follow.
